SANAULLAH VS STATE. Circumstantial evidence---Scope---Chain of circumstances---Reliance. In the absence of direct evidence, a conviction can be secured if the chain of circumstantial evidence remains unbroken and directly links the commission of the offence with the accused. The value of circumstantial evidence depends upon the establishment of a complete chain of events which leads to only one conclusion regarding the guilt of the accused and excludes every hypothesis consistent with his innocence. Where the circumstances brought on record are connected with each other and form an unbroken chain pointing towards the accused as the perpetrator of the offence, conviction can safely be based upon such evidence.
